Within the GWI survey, respondents in China have always been asked to select the region in which they live.
As of Q3 2016, this has been supplemented by a new question about their home city. Based on extensive research, input from local experts as well as consultations with clients, GWI identified around 300 key cities across 32 regions to include in the survey. The list shown to each respondent depends on which region they are in, and those who do not live in or near any of the chosen cities are able to select an “Other” option.
These cities are then divided into their respective “Tiers”, with clients able to use this break as an additional way to analyze the Chinese data. Because the “Tiers” system is not officially endorsed, there are varying views about which cities fall into which tiers. In addition, with many Chinese cities growing rapidly in size, it is common for cities to move between tiers. As a result, we sought input from local experts on how to classify our 300 cities, with the results in the attached document.
